OPENING: How do you address someone in English? This is fairly straightforward, and it is usually not as important as would be with a business or formal letter. However, there are still a few things that you should know about in terms of addressing someone properly in an informal letter.
1) First of all, in England there is not period after “Mr” but in American letters there is one.
2) Secondly, women are addressed as “Mrs”. If they are married, and with “Ms” when they are not.

EXAMPLES: This heavily depends on how well you know the person in question. Carefully consider your relationship with him or her. You could simply say: “Hi Richard,” but it is always safer to just say “Dear Richard,” (Never forget the Comma!)

3:- WHAT MAKE INFORMAL LETTERS DIFFERENT FROM FORMAL LETTERS?
ANS:- The significant points of difference between formal and informal letters are discussed as under:-
i) A formal letter is one, written in formal language, in the stipulated format, for official purpose, A letter is said to be informal when it is written in a friendly manner, to someone you are familiar with.
ii) Formal letters are written for official or professional communication. On the other hand, informal letters are used for causal or personal communication.
iii) There is a manner prescribed for writing formal letters. As opposed to informal communication, which does not follow any format.

iv) Formal letters are usually written in the third person, however, for business letters, first person is used. On the contrary, informal letters are written in first, second and third person.
v) Formal letters are used for writing letters to business, i.e. partners suppliers, customers, clients, etc., college or institute, employer, professionals, etc. As against this, we use informal letters for writing letters to friends, relatives, acquaintance, etc.
vi) While writing formal letters, we use passive voice, conversely, an active and imperative voice is used.

ANS:- The contents of your letter should be written in a personal and friendly tone. However, it’s important to adjust your use of language to the person you are writing to. A good way of assessing how you should write is to think about how you would interact with each other in real life. Also, the English and the Americans, are fond of exchanging social niceties. For example, they like asking a few polite questions “How are you?” or “How was your holiday?” for example. In general, they are not as direct as most Europeans.
• In the first paragraph of your body, you should state your reason for writing.
• In the second and following paragraphs, expand on what you mentioned in the first paragraph.
• In the final paragraphs, you can make some concluding remarks.

5: WHAT ARE THE MAIN PARTS OF AN INFORMAL LETTER?

1: DATE:
The date line is used to indicate the date the letter was written. However, if your letter is completed over a number of days, use the date it was finished in the date line. Write out the month, day and year two inches from the top of the page.

2:- SALUTATION:-
Also called the Greeting. Use the same name as the inside address, including the personal title. If you know the person and typically address them by their first name, it is acceptable to use only the first name in the salutation (for example: Dear Lucky). In all other cases, however, use the personal title and full name followed by a colon. Leave one line blank after the salutation.
If you don’t know a reader’s gender, use a nonsexist salutation, such as “To Whom it May Concern.” It is also acceptable to use the full name in a salutation if you cannot determine gender. for example, you might write Dear Chris Harmon: if you were unsure of Chris’s gender.
